Within the classic car restoration community, you'll find a wide variety of opinions regarding engine swaps. Some restorers insist on keeping the numbers-matching drivetrain for complete originality, while others don't mind upgrading to a higher-performance V8 from the same model year. Then there are resto-modders who drop in a newer fuel-injected engine, or even an engine from a different manufacturer. But there's no engine swap more controversial than replacing a classic car's combustion engine with electric motors. That's exactly what ICON did with its new EV Bronco series, which combines timeless looks with an all-electric powertrain.

A Plug-In Ford Bronco with Classic Style
ICON is well-known for its high-end restorations and restomods, such as the TR Series Chevy truck and twin-turbo 1970 Suburban we previously featured on this blog. If you've got deep enough pockets, this Los-Angeles-based shop can build you the truly unique classic truck of your dreams.
The company's BR Series takes the classic first-gen Ford Bronco to a new level of refinement, and has been available for quite some time with traditional combustion engines. "Old School" and "New School" versions are offered to meet each owner's modernization preferences. But for 2025, ICON launched a new EV option, which begins with the EV Bronco Founder's Edition, limited to only 10 examples.
ICON's EV Bronco is a classic Bronco inside and out, and is offered in full hardtop, half hardtop, soft top, and roadster configurations. The body and frame are fully refinished, and Reiger adjustable shocks, Currie axles with ARB locking differentials, and Brembo brakes are also installed.
Original-style wheels are wrapped in modern all-terrain tires, giving the Bronco an aggressive and capable appearance. Original-style trim and lighting are fitted, along with custom ICON script badges on each fender.
Under the hood, you'll find an obvious sign that this is no ordinary Bronco. The EV is powered by an industry-standard 400V system with a waterproof, thermally-managed 105kWh battery onboard. This powertrain puts down approximately 500 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via a full-time AWD system. It'll propel the Bronco from 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds.
ICON says the EV Bronco is capable of approximately 200 miles of range on a full charge. When it's time to recharge, the owner can connect it to a 6.6kW Level 2 charger at home, or use one of many Level 3 CCS Fast Charger stations offered by leading electric vehicle charging networks.
While the smooth and quiet power delivery of an EV may not feel like a typical Bronco, a classic interior puts the driver back into the feel of the 1960s. It features color-matched custom upholstery, traditional ICON gauges that display EV range and other key information, and a fully electric climate control system. A touchscreen head unit in the center console offers access to advanced features as well as a backup camera and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
ICON says it has put "thousands of development hours" into the EV Bronco project, and concludes that it "might just change your mind about electric vehicles." All this tech and R&D doesn't come cheap, so MSRP is $499,000. Thankfully, if you're not interested in the EV option, ICON will gladly build you a Bronco powered by a Ford V8.
