Under Control: All Chevy Performance's 1971 Camaro Project

Power is nothing without control — this old saying certainly rings true when it comes to working on cars. Our friends at All Chevy Performance already handled the power aspect of their 1971 Camaro project by installing a modern GM 5.3L LC9 V8, but the control side of the equation still needed to be addressed. This led them to update the Camaro's steering, pedals, and shifter so it'll be able to turn, accelerate, stop, and change gears smoothly. We were happy to assist with some much-needed parts from the Classic Industries Camaro catalog.

Step One: New Pedals

All Chevy Performance teamed up with Procision Industries to install the new parts they had accumulated. First, the new brake and clutch pedal assembly was fitted with new pedal pads.

For smooth operation, the pedal bushings and sleeves were treated with white lithium grease and then assembled.

Each pedal was aligned with the support bracket and master cylinder pushrod, then secured with factory hardware. Since the new LS engine has a drive by wire throttle, a GM Corvette C5 accelerator pedal was used along with an electronic pedal adapter from Detroit Speed.

Step Two: Upgraded Steering

ACP chose a Flaming River direct fit tilt column for this '71 Camaro. It was attached to the factory upper column mounting bracket using four 13mm bolts.

A Flaming River swivel floor mount was also installed, allowing the column to tilt smoothly on its machined aluminum ball.

At this point, the tilt column and pedal set were looking good, but the shifter still needed to be addressed to complete the Camaro's controls.

Step Three: Hurst Shifter & New Console

This car is fitted with a Tremec T56 manual transmission, so ACP paired it with a Hurst Billet Plus shifter and a cool new 8-inch shifter arm from Clayton Machine Works. A new OER gearshift boot and floor console brought the interior back to life and framed the new shifter nicely.

This three-step project completely revitalized the inside of this Camaro, and more importantly, provided the necessary controls for the driver to feel seamlessly connected to this classic machine. For more details on each of the steps, check out the full article from All Chevy Performance.
