GM Transmission Identification Guide: Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, & More

Have you ever wondered, "What transmission do I have?" As time marches on, technology changes. Classic car restoration is not a new hobby, and the older the project car, the more likely it is that someone has installed a different transmission at some point along the way. Modern 6-speeds are easy to spot, and 5-speeds are not difficult either, but when it comes to older 4-speeds and automatics, the increased variety can muddy the waters. So, whether you are heading out to check out a "For Sale" ad that could be your next project or trying to make heads or tails of a junkyard find, the following charts can be useful guides when it comes to GM transmission identification.

The Dad Factor - A Father's Day Tribute

An Enthusiast is Born

You could say I have been in the auto parts business since I was about 10 years old. As a youngster I would often spend the weekends and summers at work with my dad at his salvage yard in Florida. Dad would give me tools and provide a “job” for me to do or he would give me “my own car” as a project and let me tinker away on it to pass the time.

Classic Industries Puts Carbon Camaro Back on Track

A Carbon Fiber Show Car Built to Race

The full-race appearance of the Carbon Camaro was inspired by the IROC cars of the 70’s and taken into the 21st century with a healthy dose of carbon fiber.

The Spectre Performance Carbon Camaro, a heavily modified 1970 model, was designed as a Pro Touring machine to debut at SEMA. However, unlike many vehicles displayed at SEMA, the Carbon Camaro was not merely a showpiece.

W23 Recall Wheels

Once upon a time, one of Chrysler's wheel manufacturers came up with a cast aluminum wheel design that drew inspiration from magnesium wheels used on mid sixties Cobras. It was called the Cast Center Road Wheel and was offered as an option on various 1969 Mopar models under Sales Code W23.

Unfortunately, at that time, aluminum casting was a recent innovation and the process still had some issues. Some of the later development tests would show that the W23 wheels had a tendency to loosen the lug nuts, allowing the wheels to come off.

Huntington Beach, Calif. (February 8, 2012) – Classic Industries is proud to announce the addition of new product for the 1983-92 Camaro. As these third generation models transition from old cars into classics, it has become gradually harder and harder to find replacements for interior components that become faded and brittle over time. When faced with broken interior trim, many enthusiasts have been forced to journey through salvage yards in search of pieces that may be in no better condition than the part they are replacing. With more reproduction interior components hitting the market, it is now possible to get brand-new parts that will help bring any 1983-92 Camaro interior to showroom condition.
