1967-mustang-vin-decoder-front-three-quarters

The Ford Mustang captured the hearts of millions around the U.S. and all over the globe when she burst onto the scene on April 17, 1964. When the redesigned 1967 Mustang emerged off the assembly line, pony car fans had a sequel that many felt was even better than the premiere offering. By decoding the '67 Mustang's data plate and VIN code, we'll be able to discern what makes these babies such an automotive icon, and perhaps even an improvement over the original galloping automotive icon. Read on for our complete 1967 Mustang VIN decoder, list of paint colors and engine options, and more fun facts.

Where is the VIN and Data Plate?

The Body Plate or Data Plate is located on the left front door lock face panel. The Vehicle Identification Number is also stamped in the upper left corner of the tag, as well as on the driver's side upper fender edge in the engine bay.

Above: Notice this Mustang also is equipped with factory air conditioning.

As is readily apparent, the 1967 Mustang drop top is Candy Apple Red (code T). The interior is a black standard bench seat (code 4A). Since there are three pedals — throttle, brake, and clutch — it's reasonable to assume that the Mustang has a manual transmission. Indeed she does. The body plate and Marti Report reveal that there's a four-speed manual transmission (code 5) that backs the bad boy 390 big block V8 mill.

Above: If memory serves, the convertible top two-piece glass with glued seam rear window didn't become available until the 1968 Mustang. However, this top will fit 1964.5 to 1968 Mustang convertibles. With time the glued seam can open up and need repair or replacing.

Above: Code D designates that the rear axle/differential has a 3.25:1 limited slip axle ratio. Somehow, that code is missing from the chart below. If Kevin Marti says it's a code D, that must be correct. Notice also that the undercarriage has all the factory assembly line paint marks on the components, just as if this convertible was rolling down the assembly line on October 27, 1966.
