Restoring a 1969 Z/28 Camaro: A Step-by-Step Guide

Written by Classic Industries News | May 1, 2026 9:49:45 PM

You are about to embark on a restoration journey that will transform a well-beaten 1969 Z/28 Camaro into a pristine show car. For this book, the staff of Car Review magazine selected, purchased, disassembled, restored, and reassembled an original LeMans Blue Z/28, one of the premier small-block musclecars of the sixties and a true collector vehicle of the eighties. Starting out with a much-abused example that was previously used as a lawn service tow vehicle, project engineer Bill Breidenbach brought the car back to life for a series of Car Review restoration articles.

Introduction

How To Restore Your Camaro has been designed as a restoration procedures manual. We elected not to include specifics on engine rebuilding and body/paint work because detailed information on those subjects is readily available. However, How To Restore Your Camaro guides the 1967-69 Camaro restorer through the various stages of a restoration in the proper sequence, beginning with the actual selection of a Camaro restoration car and culminating with the final assembly and detailing of the restored vehicle. The procedures deal primarily with the 1967-69 models, but the information is also useful when restoring a later Camaro since the progression of restoration remains the same.

Also, due to space limitations and the fact that several Camaro recognition books are already on the market, we have chosen not to include originality detailing information, except when pertinent to our particular restoration Camaro.

As the early Camaros increase in collector value - and they will in the years to come - restorers will snatch up the 1967-69 models, especially the Pace Car convertibles and the Z/28s, for restoration projects that will maintain their restored value. Fortunately, early Camaros are plentiful, except for some of the rarer versions, so they are relatively easy to find and easy to restore. Over the years, though, Camaros have been abused, modified, raced, driven into rusty oblivion, and generally mistreated. The world is full of restorable Camaros, so find one (unless you already own one) and get to work on your Camaro restoration project. We hope this manual helps.
