We love a good transformation story, whether it's the redemption arc of a fictional hero or the tale of a classic car that went from a rusty relic to a work of art on wheels. This 1969 Camaro started out as a $5,600 swap meet special before its new owner turned it into a purpose-built pro-touring machine. Efrain Diaz did almost all the work on this car in his own garage, leading it to be recognized on the cover of Super Chevy Magazine under the title "Homebuilt Screamer." Autotopia LA recently interviewed Diaz to discuss the history of the build and all its impressive details.
A 700hp Camaro Built for Street and Track
Ever since Diaz purchased this Camaro about 20 years ago, it has gone through several revisions. Initially, he did the paint and bodywork himself, and replaced the Rally Sport's 350ci small block with an LS7. Eventually, it was professionally repainted in preparation for a SEMA Show appearance, and the LS7 — which blew up as a result of hard track use — was swapped out for a custom-built 434ci LS engine.

The new naturally aspirated V8 produces around 700 horsepower at the crank and sends more than 600 horsepower to the rear wheels through a Tremec T-56 Magnum six-speed transmission and McLeod twin-disc clutch. Manual Wilwood brakes and a MK60 ABS system (originally used in a BMW M3) provide reliable stopping power.
The drivetrain is backed by a Speedtech XS chassis with the company's Extreme independent rear suspension and a custom cage for rigidity. Eighteen-inch Forgeline wheels are wrapped in 315-width Falken Azenis tires for maximum cornering grip.
Diaz says this is a true street and track machine — he regularly drives it to events, competes all weekend, and drives it home again.
Weight reduction was a high priority throughout the build. Carbon fiber components include the hood, fenders, doors, trunk lid, bumpers, and spoiler. Many pieces, such as the inner fenders and brake ducts, were designed and fabricated by Diaz himself.
Inside, the Camaro blends classic styling with modern functionality. A 1969 Nova dash provides a clean layout, while original-style Camaro A/C controls operate the Vintage Air system. Adjustable brake bias, traction control, launch control, and carbon fiber Tillett seats make the interior as functional as the rest of the car.
