1964 GMC Pickup - Frame-Off Desert Truck

Last week on The Parking Lot, we featured a beautiful 1969 Chevy C10 owned by Darin Smith of local restoration and performance shop DWS Classics. That truck was rescued from the desert and painstakingly rebuilt from the ground up. This week, we have another one of DWS Classics' creations: a 1964 GMC shortbed.

Like Darin's other truck, this GMC was found baking in the desert sun, and was purchased to undergo a full restoration. Fortunately, due to the low moisture of its surroundings, the truck stayed mostly rust-free. Darin stripped it down to the bare frame, and began a frame-off build.

The frame was fitted with new suspension, brakes, wheels and tires, and the body sheetmetal was painted eye-catching bright red. Chrome bumpers, grille, hubcaps, and trim accentuate the vibrant paint. The bed floor was covered with lightly-stained bed wood panels and polished stainless bed strips.

The 1964 GMC truck's cab features a freshly-upholstered bench seat, and there's a Hurst floor shifter connected to the Muncie M21 4-speed transmission.

The GMC is powered by a 396ci big block mated to the aforementioned manual transmission and a 3.73 rear end with Positraction. The motor's valve covers bear Yenko logos for added performance cachet.

DWS Classics sourced many of the parts for this truck build from Classic Industries, and uses it as a weekday light-duty shop truck and weekend runabout.
